Halloween Dora DVD Teaching Halloween Traditions, Cognitive Thinking

Sep 25, 2009 Renee Carver

Dora's Halloween DVD is a Dora video featuring the Dora the Explorer episode BOO, teaching cognitive thinking and introducing kids to Halloween holiday traditions.

Parents searching for family friendly Halloween specials that will teach kids about Halloween traditions in a nonfrightening way can try out Dora the Explorer: Dora's Halloween. The highlight of this cute Dora video is BOO, a Nick Jr. Dora the Explorer episode in which Dora and Boots celebrate Halloween and help Little Monster return home before midnight. By watching this educational Dora episode, kids will learn about such Halloween customs as wearing costumes and trick-or-treating, as well as develop cognitive skills such as visual-spatial skills.

Dora the Explorer Episode BOO Teaches Halloween Traditions, Halloween Customs

The Season 3 Nick Jr. Dora the Explorer episode BOO opens with Dora and Boots in costume on Halloween. This cute Dora video engages the audience from the start by asking viewers if they like to dress up for Halloween too. After discussing their Halloween costumes, Dora and Boots meet Little Monster, who must return to his house by midnight but who does not know the way. Naturally, the Map (hilariously dressed up for Halloween as a ghost) charts the course for them and Dora and Boots are off on a Halloween adventure.

Each event during the rest of the show teaches cognitive thinking to kids, as well as introducing them to various Halloween traditions. On the way to the first landmark, Dora and Boots invite the viewer to play a game and identify the Halloween costumes worn by familiar Dora characters such as Benny, Isa, and Tico. In the Pumpkin Patch, the viewer is introduced to the concept of jack-o'-lanterns and can hone his or her visual-spatial skills by helping the characters match pairs of identical pumpkins.

During a quick stop at Dora's abuela's house, the characters model for young viewers how to trick or treat. Of course, Swiper then wants to swipe the candy treats, and Dora teaches both Swiper and the audience manners by explaining that if children want candy on Halloween, all they have to do is to say trick or treat.

In the Good Witch's Forest, the viewer learns some Spanish because the characters must use the Spanish word for gate to get a big creaky gate to open. Then young kids can practice kinesthetic skills by acting out how to ride a witch's broom while Dora, Boots, and Little Monster borrow and ride the Good Witch's broom the rest of the way to the Monster House, collecting some stars along the way.

At intervals during this Dora Halloween episode, Dora introduces the viewer to how to tell time by showing a clock with only a big hand and helping kids count hourly from 9 o'clock to midnight. Another repeated element is characters shouting BOO! to surprise one another, introducing children to yet another fun Halloween custom.

Dora's Halloween Extras

Dora's Halloween extras include three additional Nickelodeon Dora the Explorer shows and the Dora's Halloween Hunt game. In the Dora episode The Missing Piece, Boots and Dora must help a wizard in a puzzle find his missing wand piece. In To the Monkey Bars, Dora goes on an adventure to climb the monkey bars at Play Park. In The Big Storm, Dora and Boots help their friends find shelter before Big Storm Cloud comes.

The Dora's Halloween Hunt game allows kids to try again the learning activities they watched Dora and Boots do during the BOO episode. Children must complete each game so that Boots and Dora can reach a Halloween costume party. Kids can hone their visual spatial skills and logical thinking skills by matching identical pumpkins, pointing out the Good Witch's missing items in a still picture, and matching the costumes of Dora characters to the real-life objects they are dressed like.

Dora the Explorer Dora's Halloween Review

Overall, this Halloween Dora DVD is a family friendly way to introduce young kids to Halloween holiday traditions and fun Halloween customs. The content is only mildly spooky, and even characters that might have the potential to scare young children, like the witch and the monsters, are presented as nice and good. Furthermore, unlike some Halloween cartoons, which focus only on candy and Halloween fun, this Dora Halloween special also teaches kids cognitive skills such as matching like objects.

Families may also like to check out other educational preschool videos that teach kids about Halloween traditions, such as Go, Diego, Go! Diego's Halloween or Sesame Street A Magical Halloween Adventure, or read about the Dora the Explorer Easter episode, Egg Hunt.
